What is a Martingale Collar?

A martingale collar, sometimes called a “humane choke” was originally designed for sight hounds because of their unique structure where their heads are smaller than their necks. In a regular buckle type collar, they would simply back out of it. Martingale collars are designed so that if your dog attempts to back out of the collar, a separate second piece of the collar will tighten. Martingale collars are made in several widths from 1” to 2”. The wider the collar, the more support is given to the dog’s neck.

Our collars can be made to several different sizes and therefore can be worn by any dog, not just sight hounds. If you need a larger or smaller size than our standard sizing, we will be happy to make one for you.

Martingale collars should NEVER be left on an unattended dog. If a dog should accidentally catch a ring on something, the collar will tighten and could injure your dog. Please place tags on a separate tag collar!

What is a Tag Collar?

A tag collar is a collar to be used only with tags. It is worn loosely around the base of the dog’s neck.  Because it does not have that “second” part of the collar that will tighten, if a dog catches his tags in a grate, etc, he can simply back out of it. PLEASE NOTE: Tag collars are NEVER to be used with a leash. They can be worn around the house or used with a regular martingale collar while out for walk.

How do I measure my dog for a collar?

First, measure your dog around the neck where the collar will be worn. Next, Measure your dog’s head around the widest point (usually in front of the ears).

If these measurements fall outside our standard collars sizing, (12" to 17" for 1" and 1 1/2 " wide collars, and 13" to 18" for 2" wide collars) we will be happy to make a special one for you.

Who are you guys?

Jack & Gretchen Peckham have been involved in Greyhound rescue and adoption since 1998 with the adoption of our first greyhound Woody. Woody came from Linda Brown at Retired Racers in Acton, CA (now in Trinidad, CO)

We started a 501c3 non-profit group for fundraising called Idyllhounds, recycling to rescue racers.  We started it by cleaning up around trail heads in our town, Idyllwild, CA when ever we go hiking. Over the years we have raised several thousand dollars & donated it to several Greyhound groups.

We hope you enjoy our site and your feedback is always welcome.
